Policies and Legislation for Schools

There are number of pieces of environmental legislation which is appilcable to schools.  Here are the pieces you may want to be aware of for your school..

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive, 2007

This directive came into effect to prevent electrical equipment (computers, televisions radios etc.) being sent to landfill. This means electrical item cannot be disposed of with general rubbish and must be collected or taken to a registered collector.

Please contact Surrey County Counil to arrange collection of any WEEE that you have at your school.

Please be aware that you will not be able take any of your electrical equipment to your local Community Recycling Centre as the centres are for household waste only..

Hazardous Waste Regulations, 2005

This legislation relates to hazardous waste that can damage the environment, and need to be treated in a separate way.

The section of the legislation that is of most importance to you as a school is:

Part 5, Subsection 21

Requirement to notify premises

"Where hazardous waste is produced at, or removed from, any premises other than exempt premises, the premises must be notified to the Agency in accordance with the requirements of this Part.2"

This means that if you remove any hazardous waste from your school, (any material that is toxic, corrosive, irritant etc), or that displays the `Hazardous' orange iconography, the Environment Agency will need to be notified.
