Funding Available to Schools

There are number of ways schools can apply for or generate funding to help with waste minimisation projects in their school:

TOTAL Green School Awards

These school awards are open to young people aged 7-11. They aim to assist in encouraging environmental education within these age groups. The awards promote cross-curricular work on the environment and offer opportunities to study fossil fuels and alternative technologies. They also link in with the National Curriculum.

The Awards are split into 4 categories: Totally Active, Totally Creative, Totally Clued Up and Totally Powered Up. Groups of 30 young people (maximum) can enter any of the 4 categories. There is no limit to number of submissions a school can have. Projects can be submitted in any format (i.e. CD/CD ROM, paper, audio tapes, website, photos) as long as it is in a compatible format (Microsoft Office or pdf).

They are also split into regions, and each category winner will receive a cheque for £500. Each regional winner (out of all the category winners) will then go forward as a national finalist and will receive a further £500, making in total £1000!

The Pod - EDF Energy Green Fund

The EDF Green Energy fund has awarded over £3.2million to more than 188 renewable energy projects since its launch in 2001. It provides funding to community based organisations, helping them fund small scale, renewable energy projects. The money for the Green Fund comes from two different sources:

1) Customers on EDF's Green Tariff pay a premium of just over £1 a month on top of their bills 2) EDF match that £1 to increase the money going into the fund.

Additional Methods of Fund Raising

Another way to raise money for your school, is by collecting various recyclable materials.  Take a look at our recycling services page for more information.

Please note: Surrey Waste Managment and Surrey County Council do not specifically endorse these awards and cannot guaranteee an application will be successful.
