Fridge Recycling
Due to the impact of the amount of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) found in your fridge and freezer their disposal is now tightly controlled by regulations.
However:
- You can take your unwanted fridge or freezer to any Surrey Community Recycling Centre.
- It will cost you nothing to dispose of it at a Surrey County Council facility
- You will need to provide your name and address to ensure the fridge is from your home and not a business
- You can ask your local council if they will collect it from your home as part of a bulky waste collection if it is too heavy or unwieldy for you to transport yourself.
Ozone depleting substances are tightly controlled because of their harmful effects on the earth´s ozone layer and their contributory effects on global warming. This led to restrictions being imposed on the disposal of fridges and freezers.
Many retailers are no longer running 'take back' schemes of old fridges or freezers when a new one has been purchased. This is because of the increased costs of disposal due to the new regulations. This has made life more complicated for the Surrey householder.
When you take you fridge or freezer to the Community Recycling Centre you will be asked for your name and address, and if possible the rough date that you purchased the fridge/freezer. This information is used to ensure that no trade waste producers take advantage of this free service offered to householders.
If you cannot take the fridge to one of the Community Recycling Centres you can contact your local council to arrange a bulky collection. Bulky collections are made from your home by appointment.
If your fridge is still in good working order then you may wish to contact one of Surrey´s furniture stores who will happily see that it gets a new home. All of the furniture stores have different criteria for what they can and cannot take so do phone them first to see if they can help you.
