Bulky Waste

  • Householders can take their unwanted bulky household items to Community Recycling Centres to be disposed of free of charge
  • Some charitable organisations (furniture reuse projects - see below for a list) collect furniture and white goods in good condition for donation to low income families
  • All local borough and district councils offer a chargeable bulky waste collection service to householders for their oversized or heavy items.

Householders can take their oversized and/or heavy items, such as three-piece suites, mattresses, wardrobes, washing machines, etc, down to one of the 15 community recycling centres, in their own vehicles, to be disposed of free of charge.

Depending on the condition of the item it is either taken by a recycling contractor for refurbishment and reuse or landfilled. White goods such as washing machines and tumble driers that are beyond repair are usually taken by recycling contractors for their scrap metal value and / or spare parts. Fridges and freezers, if in good condition are picked up for reuse purposes. However, if they are beyond repair they are sent to speciaistl plants where, after the removal of hazardous components, they are recycled.

There are also a number of charitable organisations (furniture reuse projects) across the county that take bulky household items that are in good condition and conforming to fire regulations. After refurbishing, these items are donated to disadvanteged or low income families. These organisations are:

At four of the Community Recycling Centres, Surrey Waste Management Ltd, Surrey County Council's contractors who run these sites, will pass unwanted items of furniture, that are in good condition and comply with fire regulations, to two of the above furniture reuse projects.

All local borough and district councils offer a collection service for bulky items from the residents homes. The collectors do not usually come into your home to remove the item so make sure you agree to a mutually convenient place to leave your bulky waste on day of collection. There is a charge for this service depending on the number of items to be disposed. For more advice please contact your local council.

Please also note that this bulky waste service cannot be used for the collection of contruction / DIY waste.
