Surrey Local Authorities share the responsibility for waste management in the county and have a target to reduce the amount of disposable nappies in landfill.  Using washable nappies dramatically reduces the amount of nappy waste that needs to be landfilled.

 

A key element of enabling others to make the switch to sustainable behaviour is considering what advice and support is available to encourage them. Our research identified that parents were more likely to be willing to consider using washable nappies if they have positive first hand experience of using the nappies in a safe environment such as the maternity ward, where demonstrations can be offered.

The research also suggested that to change behaviour at home, alternatives to disposables should be offered in the hospitals and followed up with practical demonstrations and more accessible information sources available in the community.

The Network is an initiative of all 11 local authorities in Surrey including Surrey County Council. 

 

The Surrey Real Nappy Network has volunteer members who supply information, share experience, answer questions, promote services and encourage the change from disposable nappies to washable. The network will encourage new or experienced parents to share information and their own experience of using washable nappies to those still considering their choice.

By using those who have first hand knowledge of washable nappies to speak to others, they are likely to be able to answer all questions that may arise. Those considering washable nappies will be asusred that they have received information from a reliable source.
