Recycling
You may have heard of something called the waste hierarchy. It is pictured below and it reflects the preferred choice for the disposal of any waste either from your home or business.
Happily the items that we use most often are all recyclable. Paper, metals, green waste, textiles and glass can all be recycled into new products. All of these materials can be taken to any one of Surrey County Councilīs Community Recycling Centres free of charge or to any of the bring sites near your home. You may also be able to recycle from your kerbside, just outside your home.
Things to remember about recycling:
- Join in, even if you donīt participate every week or fortnight, any material you do put out will get recycled and you will still have done your bit.
- Follow the instructions given to you by your local authority, they will have given you guidance on how best to present your items for collection. If you add items that have not been asked for the load can get refused, as it will be contaminated, this means that the whole lorry load will be tipped away to landfill. Not only your efforts will be wasted but also those of everyone else who did make the effort to recycle. What a waste!
- Think beyond the box! It is not just what can go into your kerbside container that can be recycled, many other items can be collected and recycled elsewhere in Surrey. Have a look at our household waste guide to see what else you can recycle.
